The Art of Smudging

The ancient art of smudging began within Indigenous cultures as ceremonial acts for purification involving the burning of sacred and medicinal plants and resins and is still commonplace today. The smoke created from these sacred herbs are thought to cleanse, purify and heal the unseen energetic field (or soul) of a person; provide protection from harmful spirits, and clear a space of negative energy. Modern science backs up some aspects of this wisdom, as many of the herbs used in traditional smudging ceremonies actually do have antiseptic properties, literally removing toxins from the air.

In many cultures and religions around the world we see similar rituals. In all, the common wisdom is that smoke is purifying. Catholics and Buddhists ritually burn plants to cleanse the air, remove spiritual impurities and balance energy fields.

Traditionally, there are four elements that must be present in a smudge ritual in order to connect the physical and spiritual worlds and effectively drive away negative energies and restore balance:

  • The vessel, usually a shell representing the water element
  • The plant, resins or incense, representing the earth element
  • The fire used to ignite the smoke represents the fire element
  • The smoke created from burning the plant represents the air element.

Once the herbs are lit and the fire extinguished, a healing smoke bath is gently directed around the person, place or object needing cleansing, traditionally using a single eagle feather or fan. You may also use your hand. Meditation, mantra or prayer is used to strengthen intention during this time.

If smudging indoors, it is very important to open windows. This not only allows for ventilation so that the smoke does not harm your lungs or set off smoke alarms, but it also allows the unwanted energies to leave the environment unhindered, while welcoming in fresh and positive energies — a natural flow of energy.

Once the ceremony is complete, the ashes, which have absorbed the unwanted negative thoughts and energies, are returned to the earth.

There are four sacred, medicinal herbs in Indigenous cultures, used in ceremonial smudging — Sage, Cedar, Sweetgrass and Tobacco.

Lavender, Yerba Santa, Mugwort (Black Sage), Palo Santo and resins like Frankincense, Myrrh, Copal and Dragons Blood are also commonly used in smudging rituals.

We have created an exclusive Ritual Oil to help ground, connect, and manifest your intentions. See below, Divine Herbal Ritual Oil for details!

While the ritual of smudging any herb may help to clear your space of negative energy and uplift your spirits, choosing the herbs that resonate with your intentions will be most beneficial to Whole Being Wellness.

To smudge with herbs:

1. Open windows

2. Light the leaf end of the smudge stick and wait a few seconds before extinguishing the flame, allowing the fire to penetrate through some of the bundle.

3. Allow the herb to burn while using our Abalone Shell to catch the ashes.

4. Gently direct the smoke bath around the desired person, place or object, either by holding it with your hand or by placing it inside the shell.

5. Optionally, use our hand, a fan, or feather to direct the smoke and keep the smudge lit.

6. To extinguish, gently dab the burning end into a vessel until it cools off and burns out, or ensure that it self extinguishes after a period of time resting in the vessel.

Discard: Return ashes to the earth if possible. Storage: Keep unused smudge sticks away from moisture, children and pets. Keep partially burned smudge sticks in your vessel until ready to use again.

Smudging Herbs

Sage, the most commonly used herb in smudging rituals, is said to purify and drive out negative energy. Indigenous cultures deem it as one of the four sacred herbs and use it to also lift mood and ease insomnia. Studies have shown that various species of sage hold antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties, repelling insects, bacteria, dust, mold, pet dander and pollution. Some species of sage contain a mildly psychoactive compound called thujone, and so it is also used ritually to enhance intuition and spiritual connection. For an in depth and science based article on the benefits of sage, go here.

Black Sage Smudge Sticks

The strong, heavy aroma of Black Sage or Mugwort, is thought to have the power to draw your energy and consciousness into other realms. Also known as Dream Weed, Magical sage, Black Sage smudge is often burned before bedtime to promote lucid dreams and restful sleep. It is commonly used in rituals to improve visualization and is thought to offer protection during astral travel. It is the choice smudging herb of Shamans who use it for spiritual purification and to make any physical space sacred. Black Sage, like White Sage contains the compound thujone, which has mild psychoactive effects. This is an herb of introspection and inner healing and should be used for heavy duty cleansing powers.

It is high in antioxidants and has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Using Mugwort essential oil has many health benefits including repelling insects, calming anxiety, nerves, and restlessness.

Black Sage is also associated with the moon and female form. It helps to promote regular menstrual cycles and in preliminary clinical studies it was shown that the use of Mugwort in moxibustion procedures, combined with acupuncture, may help to reduce the rate of cesarean sections in breech babies and the need for oxytocin to stimulate labor. Due to this demonstrated effect, pregnant and nursing women should be cautious about using Mugwort or Black Sage.

Wild Lavender Sage Smudge Sticks

Lavender Sage, often referred to as ‘the mother plant’ has many therapeutic properties. It is known to drive away negative thoughts and energies, induces feelings of love, balances emotions, and enhances intuition. Its tranquility inducing and sedating effects make Lavender Sage the smudge of choice for burning at bedtime.

Yerba Santa & Sage Smudge Sticks

Yerba Santa, translated from the Spanish as ‘holy herb’ is native to Southwest America and Mexico. traditionally used for protection, purification, healing, spiritual strengthening and empowerment. Native cultures have long turned to it for treating a variety of respiratory illnesses, wounds and infections. In other cultures it is used as an alter offering due to its highly protective properties, and is said to open the heart chakra, helping to release emotional trauma; and the crown chakra, helping to connect with spirit.

Yerba Santa has a number of applications. It can be burned, steamed, or consumed as a tea, tonic, or tincture. The leaves and stems are burned for smudging rituals, or steamed as a poultice to treat skin conditions. Science has studied Yerba Santa for its anti-asthmatic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. It has the ability to break up mucus and cure dry mouth, thereby promoting better digestion.

When used alongside sage, the combination is thought to help clear and protect against negative energies, and strengthen the connection to the inner self and the Source.

Cedar Smudge Sticks

Cedar trees, known as the ‘Tree of Life’ and one of the four sacred herbs amongst Indigenous nations, are revered as being highly spiritual and holding ancient wisdom. Cedar wood has long been used in sacred temples in cleansing ceremonies and burned in sweat lodges, as it is believed to have strong purification properties. The smoke has a very pleasant scent and is said to attract and heighten good spirits and energies, while banishing negative ones. It can be used to promote balance, clairvoyance, longevity, protection and healing.

The needles can be burned, or used as a healing tea as it is very high in Vitamin C. The wood has been used for thousands of years in many cultures and cedar oils are used to relieve sore muscles, chest congestion and colds.

Our 4.5-5 inch Cedar Smudge Sticks are wildcrafted, responsibly sourced, hand tied and packaged in the U.S.

Sweetgrass Braids

Sweetgrass, known as the hair of Mother Earth to Indigenous peoples, is on the of the four sacred herbs used by all Native Americans/First Nations, the others being sage, cedar and tabacco. Sweetgrass is braided, and dried before it is used for smudging. It is traditionally burned at the beginning of a ritual or ceremony, and as the sweet aroma from the smoke rises it is believed to attract good spirits and positive energies, and purify and cleanse spaces, objects and auras of negative energy. Sweetgrass symbolizes strength and kindness- as this plant only bends when walked upon and never breaks.
Sweetgrass can be worn ornamentally around the body for protection or in the home. It is also traditionally used for basket weaving. Our 20-25 inch Sweetgrass Braids are grown, harvested responsibly and hand braided in Canada, where this plant is native.

Peruvian Palo Santo Smudge Sticks

Palo Santo, meaning “holy wood” in Spanish, is native to South America and is related to the Frankincense, Myrrh and Copal tree family. It is used to cleanse negative energy and relieve pain and stress. The burning of the wood, resin and oil has been used for centuries by indigenous cultures to drive away insects, deter ants, treat asthma, headaches, inflammation and induce relaxation, quiet the mind and raise vibrational energy. Palo Santo is rich in a compound called Limonene, which science has studied in connection to its insecticidal, anti-inflammatory, pain relieving and mood-calming properties with promising results.

Palo Santo has an invitingly sweet, rich aroma with hints of citrus, mint and Frankincense and may be used during smudging rituals to ground and connect to spirit, clear stagnant energies, increase creativity, and bring good fortune. Palo Santo is rich in a compound called Limonene, which science has studied in connection to its insecticidal, anti-inflammatory, pain relieving and mood-calming properties with promising results.

Our 2-inch Peruvian Palo Santo Smudge Sticks are harvested responsibly. Palo Santo harvesting is strongly regulated by the Peruvian government, and the species is not in danger of extinction. Farmers collect the wood from fallen branches and twigs, thus minimizing tree cutting.

Satya Sai Nag Champa Incense Sticks

Nag Champa is a sacred Indian scent and is traditionally burned as an oil or incense. In India, Nap Champa is burned below statues as an offering to the gods for goodwill and inside temples and meditation spaces to purify the air and energy fields, create an energetically calm state of being, and invoke focus, worship and positivity.
Nag Champa is the most popular incense fragrance in the world — and for good reason. It has a distinctively lush woody yet floral aroma created using a variety of exotic ingredients, with sandalwood being the main one.

The champa flower, known for its lovely floral plumeria fragrance, cultivated in India as a sacred plant to the Hindu god Vishnu, and known to possess antibacterial properties, is added and then mixed with spices, essential oils, gums, and tree resins used to enhance the scent and hold the incense together, and hand rolled onto a bamboo stick. These include vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, French lavender, patchouli, saffron and black pepper.

Nag Champa fragrance is used in soaps, lotions, oil and candles. It is a known aphrodisiac, an insect repellent, a deodorizer, and the essential oil exhibits anti inflammatory properties, making it a good choice for use in natural skincare.

We carry the top selling and most popular brand of imported Nag Champa — Satya Sai Baba, manufactured in India. 100% natural ingredients and eco-friendly packaging.

Each pack of 8-inch sticks contains 12-14 sticks of incense. One stick has an approximate burn time of 30 minutes.

Resins

To smudge with resins:
  1. Use our Om Mani Tibetan Censer, or other fire safe bowl that can house a lit charcoal tablet.
  2. Line the bottom of the censer with rocks, sand, ash or soil.
  3. Ignite the charcoal and carefully place it into the censer using tongs.
  4. Place a pea sized amount of the resin tears (pieces) directly on top, or first grind up the resin into a fine powder and sprinkle onto lit charcoal.
  5. Similar to smudging with herbs or incense, gently direct the smoke to desired areas or individuals with a clear mind and strong intentions.

Discard: Allow your coals to extinguish completely and cool for at least 2 hours before throwing away your ashes. Return ashes to the earth, if possible.

Storage: Keep resin in an air tight container in a cool dark place so moisture does not get to it. This will ensure that your resin burns clean and gives out a fresh aroma every time. Keep away from children and pets.

Frankincense & Myrrh

Frankincense and Myrrh, both natural tree resins, have been used therapeutically as well as spiritually for thousands of years in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. They belong to the Bursea plant family, like Copal, and are considered very valuable (they were once used as trade currency) for their cleansing and healing properties, but also because the trees do not grow well outside of their native habitat.

They both have warm, spicy and slightly sweet aromas while Myrrh is more smoky and woodsy and Frankincense is earthy and sharp.

Many people know of Frankincense & Myrrh through the biblical tale of the Three Wise Men (Magi) and their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh at Jesus’ birth; thus the connection to Christmas and insight into how highly they were regarded.

These plants are commonly paired together either in resin, incense or oil form to create a powerful healing tool for Mind, Body, and Spirit. Both have antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory properties, and are rich in antioxidants, which have powerful healing and preventive applications for our health.

Golden Copal

Copal is a natural tree resin and comes from the Buresa tree, or elephant tree family in Mexico. Since ancient times, Copal incense and resins have been considered sacred and medicinal to the Mayan and Aztec people. It was seen as the ‘blood’ of trees, and used as offerings to the deities and the gods atop the pyramids and was found in the sacred burial grounds in the Mayan ruins. It was also used to clear the body of diseases, drive away insects, drive away misfortune, cleanse the body and spirit of negative or unwanted energy, and for purification and protection purposes. Shamans traditionally inhaled the smoke to induce trance like states. In Mexico today, Copal is burned year round in churches and during the annual Day of The Dead celebrations to help souls find their way back home to visit the living.

There are three varieties of Copal, all having similar therapeutic properties. Golden Copal, the variety we offer has a slightly sweet, crisp, earthy and citrusy scent.

Using copal to smudge before or during meditation and ceremony can assist in strengthening peace of mind and awareness, as it is linked to the crown chakra. It can help reduce anxiety, stress, and depression thus increasing focus and feelings of love, positivity and encouragement; and removing energy blockages or stagnations from the body.

It is also very useful to cleanse and activate energy crystals and jewelry with Copal prior to use. Simply hold the object you wish to purify over the smoke bath for a few seconds, ensuring to rotate and cover all sides of the object.

Our Golden Copal is imported from Mexico and available in 1oz pouches or included in our Mindfulness Bundles.

Abalone Shells & Wood Cobra Tripod Stands

For Indigenous peoples, abalone, a type of mollusk, have great value and spiritual meaning. Apart from the sea creature being a valuable source of protein for many, the shell provides a spiritual connection to the water element, and it is believed that together with a sacred herb, the spirit world can receive messages sent to them through smudging ceremonies. In some cultures the shells were used as currency, and in the Apache tribe, abalone is used to mark a girl’s rite of passage into womanhood. Abalone is mainly found in the western U.S. coasts and South Africa and today, are highly sought after. Spiritually, abalone carries significant healing, clarifying, protective and balancing properties. It brings with it a natural shielding that blesses the person holding it with tranquility. Humans have been making abalone jewelry, masks and decorations for centuries because of its divine connection to the ocean, the crown, third eye and heart chakras and its soothing, emotional balancing energies. Using abalone shells for smudging creates a strong spiritual cleansing and deep intuitive connection to Source. Our pink 5-6 inch Abalone Shells, imported from Mexico, are a beautiful iridescent color and the right size for most of our smudging herbs. Simply unfold and place your vessel on top, creating an alter for your ceremonial smudges.

Om Mani Tibetan Censer

Om Mani is shortened from the ancient and powerful 6-syllable Buddhist mantra “Om mani padme hum” commonly translated as “The jewel is in the lotus”. According to  Buddhist master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche,

“The mantra Om Mani Pädme Hum is easy to say yet quite powerful, because it contains the essence of the entire teaching. When you say the first syllable Om it is blessed to help you achieve perfection in the practice of generosity, Ma helps perfect the practice of pure ethics, and Ni helps achieve perfection in the practice of tolerance and patience. Pä, the fourth syllable, helps to achieve perfection of perseverance, Me helps achieve perfection in the practice of concentration, and the final sixth syllable Hum helps achieve perfection in the practice of wisdom.”

You may try reciting this mantra to see how it resonates with your rituals.

Made from copper, a metal believed to carry spiritual energy and having healing properties, our lightweight Om Mani Tibetan Censer can be used for all different types of smudges by adding socks or sand to it. Use with smudge and incense sticks, cone burners, resins and charcoal. The removable lid is perforated and, depending on the type of smudge, removing the lid may be best to allow for better air flow.

We recommend filling the base of the censer with rocks (included), sand, ashes or soil. Please refer to instructions below.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Burning Incense Sticks: Fill incense burner with enough sand to properly hold upright your incense sticks.

Burning Incense Cones: Fill base of incense holder with sand or rocks. Place burner on ceramic coaster to protect counter top, as the base of the burner may get hot. Place lit incense cone on top of sand or rocks. Allow to burn with the lid removed. Incense will not burn with the lid in place.

Burning Resins with charcoal: Fill base of incense holder with sand or rocks. Place burner on ceramic coaster to protect counter top, as the base of the burner may get hot. Follow instructions for lighting charcoal tablet then place on top of sand or rocks. Allow charcoal to come to temperature then place small amounts of resin tears or powder onto hot charcoal. Allow to burn with the lid removed. Some smudges will not burn with the lid in place.

Other Uses: This beautiful censer can also be used as a keepsake for small jewelry, earrings or trinkets.

The censer is 4.25 inches wide, 3.5 inches tall with antique finish.

DIVINE Blue Lotus Ritual Oil

Expand consciousness and enhance manifestation potential with DIVINE Blue Lotus Ritual Oil. This powerful 4-ingredient potion contains the sacred Blue Lotus, a water dwelling lily native to northern and central Africa, and first discovered growing along the Nile River. Ancient Egyptians revered the plant and we can see their affinity depicted in art, monuments, temples, tools, and papyrus.
Blue Lotus was a highly sought after and cultivated herb. It was later exported to the Mediterranean, Greece, the Middle East, Tibet, and as far as the Alexandrian empire extended.

The star-shaped flowers typically bloom for 3-5 days, moving with the sun and closing at night; Ancient Egyptians noticed this solar attunement and believed the flower’s golden center to be where the sun god, Ra, emerged from. All parts of the Blue Lotus plant (flowers, leaves, rhizomes, petioles) can be used medicinally.

Traditionally, Blue Lotus was used ceremonially but was also made into cosmetics and perfumes; imbibed as a tea or elixir; and simply inhaled for its relaxing, intoxicating fragrance. The flowers and buds were often burned recreationally as well, for their narcotic and aphrodisiac effects.

Ancient Egyptian culture associated the Blue Lotus with the afterlife and rebirth, royalty and rulers — King Tutankhamun’s mummy was found covered with dried Blue Lotus flowers when exhumed hundreds of years later.

Modern herbalists use Blue Lotus as a sedative, febrifuge, aphrodisiac, antidepressant, antioxidant, anti-convulsant, and anti-inflammatory herb. It has been successfully used to purify the blood, treat tuberculosis, expel worms and parasites, relieve edema, enhance libido and treat erectile dysfunction, improve lactation, alleviate anxiety and depression, staunch internal bleeding, and balance blood sugar levels. Blue Lotus has a particular affinity for the kidneys, heart, and nervous system and is energetically warming.

Our Blue Lotus Ritual Oil features not only the organic flowers, but also therapeutic grade Blue Lotus and Jasmine essential oils, creating a high potency infusion with cold pressed Sweet Almond oil. Read about the benefits of each ingredient here.

Our divinely aromatic ritual oil to be used any time, but especially during meditative or ceremonial rituals for a focused euphoria.

As is the case far too often with the plant kingdom, modern science has only done preliminary studies on the potential therapeutic properties of the Blue Lotus. There are no official recommendations for dosage or safety data. However, the existing studies do substantiate the ancient wisdom of the powerful benefits this plant offers.
